The Ground Effect

Grounded Clam

One of my favorite practices for aligning my mind, body, and soul is earthing—the simple act of physically connecting with the Earth.

The philosophy behind grounding reaches back through ancient wellness traditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, qi refers to the vital energy believed to flow through the body, while Ayurveda emphasizes living in harmony with nature and balancing vata, one of its three essential energies. Though these traditions are distinct, both recognize a deep connection between our inner state and the natural world around us. I love seeing modern wellness return to something so timeless and instinctive: our connection to nature.

I began diving deeper into these concepts during my own experience with hormonal acne, when I felt that conventional approaches weren't addressing the full picture for me. It led me to become more curious about the connection between our internal rhythms, our environment, stress, sleep, nutrition, and the way we feel in our bodies.

Our hormones are intertwined with so much - energy, sleep, mood, digestion, skin, and overall well-being. That experience taught me to pay closer attention to what my body was communicating rather than simply trying to silence every symptom.

Coming Back Down to Earth

Earthing itself couldn't be simpler: take off your shoes and place your bare feet on grass, sand, or soil.

The idea behind earthing is that direct contact with the Earth’s surface allows the body to interact with its natural electrical environment. With constant exposure to technology, screens, artificial light, and indoor environments, intentionally reconnecting with nature can feel more important than ever. Walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil creates that direct connection with the Earth beneath us, something our shoes normally keep at a distance.

Sync yourself with the planet’s natural electromagnetic field.

We spend so much of our lives separated from nature—inside buildings, wearing shoes, looking at screens, surrounded by artificial light and constant stimulation. There is something almost radical now about simply standing barefoot in the grass and doing nothing.

Living in fast-paced Manhattan, I especially crave these moments. The city is constant: movement, noise, bright lights, screens, traffic, people. Grounding gives me a counterbalance, a moment to quiet the external noise and come back to myself.

When I can't get outside, I create that feeling in other ways. I'll hold a crystal as a form of sensory grounding, stretch for a few minutes, lie on the floor, or settle into child's pose and focus on slow, intentional breathing. These aren't the same thing as physically connecting with the Earth, but they serve a similar purpose for me: bringing my attention out of the noise and back into my body.

Nature Is Medicine for the Senses

Hug a tree, literally. It sounds almost too simple, but spending time around trees and green spaces has been studied for its relationship with stress, mood, and markers of physiological relaxation. You don't necessarily need an elaborate wellness practice. Sometimes the practice is simply going outside.

Walk barefoot through the grass. Sit beneath a tree. Feel the sun on your skin. Listen to leaves moving instead of another notification. Put your phone away for ten minutes and notice what's around you.

So many of us move through life disconnected from our bodies without even realizing it. We're thinking about the next meeting, the next message, the next thing we need to accomplish. Grounding reminds me that wellness doesn't always need to mean adding something else to my routine.

Sometimes, it means removing the noise.

For me, these small rituals bring me back into the present. They help me feel calmer, more centered, creative, and steady - even when everything around me is moving quickly.

Take off your shoes. Step outside. Hug a tree if you want to. Let yourself reconnect with the natural world and remember what it feels like to simply be here.
